Oooooooh figs are so beautiful. In Tucson, we can only get them at a limited time of year, and I load up for fabulous winter salads. A nice side dish to a good book!
Absolutely! Do they ripen in winter in Tucson? You must have very mild weather. Clearly I don’t know much about where you live but I’d love to know more.
Intriguing reading recommendations as usual, Marg. And that salad with fresh figs looks delicious! As our seasons are reversed, I’ll have to wait another 6 months for fresh figs! Lucky you to have ready access to them!
Hi Liz! I’m delighted that you found Book Chat! Thanks for taking the time to say hello. You are lucky to live in such a beautiful part of the world. I forgot to mention that we are having our inaugural Book Chat Book Club meeting in March. We are reading The Storied Life of AJ Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin if you’d like to join in.
Marg, not sure where the larger crops come from when figs hit the markets in Tucson in late fall. Some are grown in the Phoenix/Mesa area and people have fig trees in their yards or big pots. I have yet to try one, but now, thinking I will look for one in a local nursery and to try it. There are two growing seasons here for figs, early summer and late fall. Perhaps I can have more salads!
Hi Marg, I love this new platform you are using. I found it via the link you included in your monthly email so I have downloaded it and am ready to go!. I too will add The Schoolhouse to my reading list. I read The Storied Life of AJ Fikry which I enjoyed and have started another of Gabrielle Zevin's books, Tomorrow, Tomorrow and Tomorrow. Looking forward to the first Book Chat Book Club meeting. Di x
Hello Di! It’s so lovely to hear from you. I haven’t read Tomorrow and Tomorrow yet, but it’s definitely on my list. I’m very excited about the book club and can’t wait to meet everyone (and talk about the book of course).

I thought I wouldn't like Dead Romantics but I LOVED it.
Me too! It was thoroughly enjoyable.

Ah, now I get the fig references as per family chat! Adding The Schoolhouse to my lengthy list of ebook requests.
Hi Marg,
Thanks for the recommendations. I’m new to your book chat page after I found you in Substack recommendations.
I’m from Australia and live on the east coast in an area of the Northern Rivers, New South Wales
with beautiful beaches and beautiful countryside as well.
Cheers
Liz

Very much intrigued by The Schoolhouse, great recommendations as always Marg, thank you 💕📚
Thank you!

Yes, salads are good all year round. I tried to grow a fig tree from a cutting a friend gave me but it had no fruit. Best to get one from a nursery.
I’ve considered The Schoolhouse a few times but not bought it - I’ll give it a try on your recommendation though!
Let me know what you think! Also, do you have access to a public library?
Yes! Haven’t checked if they have a copy at our local library but I was very tempted by the hardback when we were travelling in England!
It has a lovely cover! I hope that doesn’t sound shallow, but I’m a sucker for a good cover.
Oh not at all! Cover design is a fine art!
100%
