Strangely I've only read one of these titles given that about half my reading is from your recommendations. I loved that Woolves book and it is one that I have thought about from time to time. I also used to recommend it to older students. Since I'm travelling atm I'm reading a wonderfully shallow Ruth Galloway mystery picked up from a free bookshelf along the way. Perfect.
Funnily enough The Earth Hums in B Flat was one I recently tried and didn’t persist with. It had been on my shelf for years but with an international move coming up I’m trying to be ruthless in reading it or donating it with so many books and only keeping what I really LOVE. Totally agree with you about finding the right book for the right time. I’m absolutely a mood reader and right now I need stuff that’s super compelling!
That’s so interesting. I read it years ago and loved it but perhaps I should re-read it and see if it still floats my boat. Another thing that struck me when I looked at my loans list was that I had sometimes borrowed books twice, often years apart. for example I just re-borrowed Life after Life again as I didn’t read it last time around.
What was the last book you read that you found super compelling? I’d love to know.
I definitely think our view of books changes with time! I read a book in about 5 hours on the weekend (thanks to plane and train travel) called Dark Mode. A psychological thriller with a dark web plot and true crime references. It was utterly chilling and I couldn’t put it down! On the nicer end of the spectrum I read Duck à l’Orange for Breakfast which was a lovely contemporary novel (we actually are featuring these on our podcast, Better Words, as well)
Ooh, thanks for some new book recommendations as I’m a little stuck on what to read next. I’ve been listening to an enjoyable David Copperfield book on tape and realizing again how gorgeous the writing is--and how compelling it is spoken aloud. Haven’t yet picked up the book for the June club meeting, but that’s probably next!
I was forced to read David Copperfield at school so it doesn't bring back any happy memories for me, but I was thinking of reading Demon Copperhead. Have you read it?
No, I haven’t read Demon Copperfield, but I’m intrigued. Apparently it was inspired by David Copperfield, which luckily I wasn’t forced to read but came to on my own and liked. I enjoyed Barbara Kingsolver’s early novels but haven’t read much of her recently. I do hope to read this one.

I like Ruth Galloway books very much. She’s a good writer. Perfect for travelling.

I’ll have a listen! Dark Mode sounds right up my alley as well.

Yes, I have read and enjoyed Demon Copperhead. Recommend it.
Thanks Phyllis. I'll move it up the list.
