Marg, the Golden Dumplings look delicious. Thanks for the recipe. I'm planning on attending your book club in October. I've been wanting to read Kingsolver's book.
Thanks Jackie. I’ve been planning to read Demon for a while but haven’t gotten around to it, so this will give me an incentive to get going. Looking forward to meeting you and hearing what you think.
Marg, I have DC on order at the library. I am certain it is quite popular, so good to know we have time.
I just finished another one of your recommendations, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. A delightful story for kids which is how I felt while reading. Currently reading one of my favorite authors, Abigail Thomas, Still Life at Eighty. Thank you for more insights on your post.
I’m so glad you read Edward Tulane! It’s definitely one of my favourites. I also enjoyed her other book, ‘Because of Winn Dixie’ and think about it often. It’s a children’s book but has some interesting themes about loss and grief without being too heavy-handed.
Thanks for reading my newsletter and contributing to the conversation. I really appreciate it.
Enjoyable as always, Marg! I’ve never heard of or tried sweet dessert dumplings, but I do love golden syrup, so these sound like something I’d just lap up!
I’m looking forward to finishing Demon Copperhead, which I’ve been listening to and reading slowly, with interruptions as my library renewals run out while other readers demand a turn. It’s clearly very popular. I think it’s a good choice for a book club as it’s multilayered, with a first-person narrator whose tale is equal parts heartbreaking and inspiring, but also filled with humor and deep empathy.
I just started a novel I’m enjoying quite a lot called Saturday Night at the Lakeside Supper Club, by J. Ryan Stradal. It’s a story about a Midwestern (U.S.) family struggling to hold onto a beloved restaurant, each other, and a way of life. I’m finding it an entertaining read while on a summer road trip.
Golden syrup dumplings are a very much a depression era food because they are cheap to make (no eggs), so they are very familiar to older Australians but probably not young people. They are delicious though!
I’ve heard of J Ryan Stradal, and would love to read his earlier book, Kitchens of the great Midwest but it isn’t in our library.
There are 17 holds on Demon but I’m hoping it will come through soon. I just started following Barbara Kingsolver on Insta. She has some lovely images of her farm.

I'm sorry to hear about your back, Marg - I'm a bit behind on my emails so I didn't know. Rest up and take care of yourself x

Oops sorry Marg! I didn't realize the blog posted my first comment!
